This project was a competition held by “Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP).” that intended to promote the aboriginal culture. The chosen proposal and design would then be manufactured.
Competitors had to choose one of Taiwan’s aboriginal tribes, analyze its characteristics, and develop related products. The most feasible and the most creative proposal would win the prize.
Atayal is a big aboriginal tribe in eastern Taiwan, that owns a long history. One of their best-known characteristics is “Facial tattoos”, a unique custom which is the symbol of adulthood. Atayal is the only aboriginal tribe that has the tattoo custom mainly on faces. It symbolizes the spirit and the honor of Atayal.
“Atayaize” has a wooden stem with totem-pattern and the facial tattoo pattern on its back of cambered surface. When people use it for meals and look into the reflection, they will see their own face with the totem of the Atayal-style tattoo, making them feel like a proud Atayal tribal member at that moment.
